Problem Solving Using MS Excel

A mild earthquake has resulted in a fission reaction at a nuclear plant. To make things worse, a hurricane is forecasted for next 10 days. Study disaster response data and arrive at the decisions to evacuate citizens and foreigners from the disaster zone without any further damage.

Simulation Overview

A small earthquake has caused several undetermined incidents. The Federal's Nuclear Plant is 80 miles away from Starford's coast. Recent reports suggest that there could be an occurrence of a leak. This Nuclear plant has an inbuilt mechanism to shut down itself automatically in the event of tremors. But this time, the shutdown procedure caused a fission reaction that went off the rails. We are now suspecting that there is a leak.

And to make matters worse, Met Dept has forecasted a Severe Hurricane that is expected to strike the coast within about 12 days. To reduce the risk of tension and chaos, The President of the Atlantis Federation wants you to evacuate foreigners and citizens from Starford before the Hurricane comes in. The President has authorized the amount of $50million from his Disaster Management Budget.

Every office in the public sector with its information and staff is at your disposal. It's a race against the clock, and every wrong decision you make will result in negative consequences. Examine the disaster response Data and analyze them with MS Excel skills before making your choice.

SimBytes and description

Data Prep Work

Seldom do we get information from the real world, which is ready for analysis and devoid of errors and inconsistencies. Do not expect the Simulator to give you ready made, heat and eat data. This SimBYTE is all about prep work.

Test it or Rest it

Data inconsistencies are best identified by running conditional tests. This SimBYTE is dedicated to Conditional Testing using IF and its variants.

Applying filters

Weeding out the irrelevant and outliers is important when dealing with large chunks of data. Decision makers run the risk of factoring exceptions more than they should when outliers exist in the data set. Filters help in this regard.

Read vs See

Reading a report versus viewing a report are two different things. We all know the idiom “Pictures speak louder than words”, time to deploy it. This SimBYTE is dedicated to the Graphs and Charts you can use.

Checkpoint 1

Duration: 60-90 minute
Participants must complete SimBYTE 5 to 8 before Next Session: Checkpoint 2.

View and Review Visually

Often, static visuals may lead us to stale decisions. If the data visualized can be sliced further on demand, questions you may have about your data, can find answers. This SimBYTE is dedicated to exploring the power of Pivoting data.

Stories are best when visualized

Visualizations is all about connecting the dots. Timelines are crucial when summarizing or explaining patterns. This SimBYTE is dedicated to data-oriented storytelling.

Your date is here

Majority of data is a function of time and dates. This SimBYTE is designed to help you race your data against time and dates.

Connect those dots, right!

(Part one) Hoping to find everything you need in one report, is statistically a remote possibility. You must put data together the way you want it. This SimBYTE is dedicated to achieving this objective.

Checkpoint 2

Duration: 60-90 minute
Participants must complete SimBYTE 9 to 12 before Next Session: Grand Finale

Look it up

(Part two) Finding what you need from multiple sources will need you to look-up. This SimBYTE will hook you up with the two powerful look-up functions ever constructed in spreadsheeting history.

Show me the money!

Financial tests are possible using MS Excel. Let us deep dive into them in this SimBYTE.

What are my options?

You want options, you get them. There is no one way to solve a problem or challenge. This SimBYTE is dedicated to exploring options.

It is already tomorrow somewhere

Crystal gazing may not be counted as science, but intelligent data driven guesstimates have some statistical backing to it. Explore the art and science of crystal gazing in this SimBYTE

Grand Finale

60-90 minute
Your facilitator will collate the reports from the simulator and prepare the dashboard for discussion during the Grand Finale
